How to Crochet a Granny Square

The classic square, round by round. 15 to 20 minutes each once you know it.

What you need

Worsted cotton or acrylic yarn in a few colours, a 5 mm hook, scissors and a tapestry needle.

Step 1: The first round

Work four clusters of 3 double crochet into a ring, with 2 chains between them. Those chains are the corners.

Step 2: Grow the square

In every corner space work 3 double crochet, chain 2, 3 double crochet, with 1 chain between corners.

Step 3: Block it

Pin each square flat and dampen it, so they all come out the same size. It matters when you join them.

Step 4: Join your squares

Lay them out, join them into rows, then join the rows. Three joining methods are in the full tutorial.
