How to Crochet a Magic Ring

The start for amigurumi, hats, coasters and flowers, with no hole in the middle.

Step 1: Make the loop

Lay the tail across your palm, take the yarn around two fingers and cross it over the tail to make an X.

Step 2: Work into the ring

Crochet your stitches into the centre of the ring, around both strands. Six is the most common number.

Step 3: Pull it closed

Hold the stitches and pull the tail firmly. They draw into a tight little circle with no hole.

An easy alternative

Chain 4 and join into a ring. It leaves a small hole, which is the traditional start for a granny square.
