Smooth, light-coloured yarn, a 5 mm hook, small scissors and a blunt tapestry needle.
The hook goes in your dominant hand. The other hand holds the work and feeds the yarn with steady tension.
Bring the yarn over the hook and pull it through the loop. That's one chain. Repeat.
Insert the hook, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through both loops. Work one in each chain.
A scarf, a dishcloth and a coaster are all just rows or rounds of basic stitches.
