How to Read Crochet Patterns

They look like code until you know the rules.

Read the whole pattern first

Most written patterns have the same sections in roughly the same order. Read all of them before you pick up a hook.

Learn the abbreviations

sc, hdc, dc, tog, MR: a short list covers most patterns. US and UK terms differ, so check which one is used.

Trust the stitch count

The number in brackets at the end of a line is how many stitches you should have. Count after every row.

A line, translated

Each round of a flat circle adds six stitches, and the count at the end confirms it.

Habits that help

Mark your repeats, count often and practise on something small, like a coaster or a flower.
